Public comments invited on draft 2011 Regional Roadmap

Sunshine Coast communities, businesses and organisations are invited to comment on the draft 2011 Regional Roadmap, a comprehensive plan for the region’s evolution based on its strengths, known challenges and positive opportunities for advancement.

Among its key focus areas are the emerging opportunities offered by the transition to a digital economy, a high-speed broadband network and the Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

The RDA Sunshine Coast Chair said the roadmap outlines the social, economic and environmental profile of the Sunshine Coast and identified positive opportunities and strategies to achieve them.

The Chair encouraged the community to comment and have a say in how best to achieve a prosperous and sustainable Sunshine Coast.

The Roadmap notes that the region is categorised by rapid population growth, a tourism-based economy, and a complex and diverse culture, history and demography. These distinct circumstances create opportunities to develop strategies that will deliver future prosperity and wellbeing for our regional communities.

In overviewing the 2011 draft Regional Roadmap, the Chair said “The roadmap gives highest priority to driving economic development and employment and advocating for key regional infrastructure. From listening to the community, I am confident that there is a broad consensus that this should be our top priority in the current economic circumstances.

“There is a strong focus on industry diversification, opportunities to lever off the roll-out of high speed broadband and a renewed focus on collaboration and innovation.

“The roadmap builds on our competitive advantages in advocating a transition to a high-tech, low-carbon region.

“For the health and wellbeing of our regional communities, we have adopted a place-based approach to creating healthy environments. This shows a strong focus on localism as well as regionalism.

“The roadmap also focuses on regionally available education and training opportunities which are essential to economic development and knowledge based industries.”

Community input is essential to ensure that RDA Sunshine Coast’s coordination and consensus-building efforts are consistent with public opinion, hopes and ambitions for the future of the Sunshine Coast.
